5 Things that Helped Improve My Memory
75I Think therefore I am
The ability to think, process and recall memory is the most important indications that we are who we are. Your memory is the sum total of all your experiences and without it, you are just a shell of a person.
Niche once said, I think; therefore, I am. What Nichi suggests was, the mere fact we are capable of cognitive function, is proof we are, and that we existed at all.
From the time we are born, our brains are developing and neuro pathways are growing and connecting one to another.
You don't have to be gifted mentally, and you don't have to be an Einstein either to become a great thinker. Some people have a greater capacity than others, but we are all capable of increasing and developing our memory and brain power.
Alkaline Water
One of the most important things one can do to improve memory and mental clarity is to drink plenty of water. Our brains are 85% water and if we are drinking lots of soda, caffeinated drink and alcohol, it is a fact that you are dehydrated.
Alkaline water is a better source of drinking water, because the molecules in alkaline water are very small and begin to hydrate your body and within seconds. It also helps to remove toxic chemicals that hinder the optimum functioning of the body!
Games
The fact that children spend too much time on video games, they actually help develop hand-eye coordination. I remember years ago how when my son got a Mario Brothers game how well he played it. I would stay until until 2:00 am trying to win a game.
My son's brain only 25 years younger than mine, was quicker and his hand-eye coordination was lightening quick. As adults we need to continue to challenge ourselves to maintain our brain power. Online and video games are great at any age, to help your mind stay young and active.
Puzzles
Puzzles help to develop the areas of the brain that control problem solving and critical think. Puzzles such as jig saw puzzles, cross word, a rubic's cube all contribute to the creating a finer performing brain.
Do you remember when you were in kindergarten? Puzzles are still a part of every early childhood learning program.
I have found that some of the smartest people I know still do puzzles or some kind. If you want to stay alert and continue to function on the top of your game, incorporate some form of puzzle into your life.
Meditation
Recent research from China and the University of Oregon reveals that meditation can help develop brain matter. Ten or more hours of meditation using integrative body/mind development, helps to increase and strengthen brain connections.
IBMT therapy, incorporates body relaxation, breath work, imagery and music. Meditation improves the areas of the brain that facilitate problem-solving and improve the regulation of behavior and emotions.
Spiritual meditative prayer, also calms the emotions and allows you to receive clarity and improves the ability to problem solve.
Diet
The most important thing you can do for your brain is to eat healthy. Sugar, caffeinated drinks, processed food and junk food, unnaturally alters the brain's ability to function naturally and clearly. Have you ever seen how a child behaves after he has has too much sugar? The sad thing is these substances is much of the processed food that we eat every day.
Make a decision to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables. Limit you intake of sugar and caffine and increase brain foods, such as:
- bluberries
- nuts and seeds
- avocado
- wild salmon
- dark chocolate
Continuing Education
Don't stop learning. Continue to learn by going back to school, or taking a college course to remain mentally alert. It is not necessary to go for a degree, just go back to school. If you are interested in interior decorating, photography, car repair, nursing, horticulture, whatever it is, go back to school and learn about it.
You will feel more fulfilled. You will meet people with like passions and keep your mind open to different things. You are never too old to learn something new and many colleges have an annex and other opportunities for continued learning at a modest cost.

Anything that helps me to get rid of my daily battle with memory lapse is good with me. Great Hub!
Thanks 2besure. Can't wait to read the rest. I play solitaire on line. When I got the idea, I didn't know how to play but learned from the computer prompts and would then spend hours...it helped my eye coordination and kept my brain functioning quicker and not sluggish. After working 40 years in computer legal work, research and the like, I'd missed the challenge. Now, I try to find more activities. Thanks for the list of foods...regrettably I am an avid coffee drinker...must adjust my diet.
Short but very effective great work.
