If you have a persistent cough and have not had success in finding relieve. I suggest you try some of the remedies in this article.

There are many natural remedies that have passed down through the ages, that can successfully stop a persistent cough.

Different coughs respond better to different methods. Reasons for coughing, range from a simply cold, the flu, allergies to serious medical illnesses such as asthma or bronchitis.

Whatever the reason for the cough, it is a signal that your body is trying to remove blockages such as mucus or impurities from your lungs. Coughing also makes the throat sore not to mention, spreading germs at a rate of up to 500 miles per hour.

So, needless to say what ever the reason for your cough, you want it to stop, or at least soothe your chest and throat from its results. Let's look at the methods.

Natural Remedies to Stop Coughing

Lemon and peppermint: When I was a child and had a cough or a soar throat my mother would give us a half of lemon with a peppermint as a straw. As you suck on the peppermint, it mixes with the lemon to both sooth the throat and help break up congestion.

Natural cough syrup: Mix equal parts of chopped onion, ginger and dehydrated cane sugar in a jar. Cover and let sit for four hours. The moisture in the onion and ginger begins to dissolve the cane sugar and the sugar draws out the properties in the onion and ginger and you will have a natural cough syrup.

Hot steam: Using a humidifier can be very helpful in administering moist air the the nasal passages and throat relieving the need to cough.

Raw Manuka Honey: For thousands of years people have known of the benefits and the healing power of honey. Honey was used centuries ago because of its antibacterial properties to prevent a wound from becoming infected. Take a teaspoon of manuka honey every few hours, to help stop a cough.

Ginger Tea: Ginger works well to suppress a cough. Cut a few slices of fresh ginger in 8 ounces of water, bring to a boil and let sit for three minutes.

Thyme Tea: Thyme works well to stop a cough. Use the seasoning or fresh thyme to brew a cup of tea to help stop a cough. A half teaspoon in 8 ounces of water, bring to a boil and let sit, then strain and drink.

Honey and ginger: To stop a cough, grade a wedge of ginger root and extract a half teaspoon to a table spoon of ginger juice. Mix with a tablespoon on honey and mix. Take a little of the money and ginger mixture as needed.

Ayunrveda cough remedy: Mash one ripe banana, add a teaspoon of honey with a pinch of black pepper. Eat twice a day to stop a cough with no side effects.

Bee Propolis: Propolis seeps from buds of some trees. It is collected by bees and carried to there hive where they break it down. It has been discovered that propolis has antifungal, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties and boosts the immune system. Propolis is good for colds, flu, coughs and soar throats caused by virus. Add 10 drops of propolis to a teaspoon on honey three times a day.

Water: Believe it or not, water is an excellent lubricant for the lungs and will help loosen up mucous that is hindering breathing. Alkaline water is particularly excellent in hydrating the body.

Mark, it doesn't taste bad at all! Apple cider vinegar is not as bitter as white vinegar. That mixture is also used to burn fat and lose weight.

Eating a spoonful of mustard also helps.

But I have to admit that it really tastes awful. :)

Thanks a lot for your advice. Natural remedies are the best. I've been coughing a lot at night (yeah, only at night when I lie down). Not sure why. I'll try the ginger tea and manuka honey. :)

I can confirm this does work, I've used honey and mint for years and in fact I carry artic chill peppermint gum in my purse and if you ever get that tickle cough that keeps you from speaking without coughing chewing a peice of this gum stops the cough and bring quick relief, I'm never without it as I have allergies and a cough could hit at any given time. Great topic, love this hub and rating it up and book marking. Thanks :)

I'm not sure how natural it was. My Dad would give me honey and lemon mixed in a shot of bourbon(yeah, i know it seems inappropriate to some). It worked wonders for a cough.

This is good to know my Dr. told me that there's an anonvirus (adnoids)going around. She told me there was nothing that can be done, that it had to go away by itself. I will research and add propolis to my list.

Thanks for all the different remedies on how to stop a cough. I have used Propolis before, and it helped some of my friends stopped their coughs which started for more than 2 months. Taking cough mixtures from doctors did not help. But after 2 days of taking Propolis, the coughs stopped. Just thought I let you know about this. Thanks for the hub.
