Free Yearly Credit Report
71There are sites and TV commercials offering so called, free credit reports, only to find out when you go to their site that you have to first sign up for some credit monitoring program, in order to get your "free" credit report.
I did this a few years ago when I didn’t know any better. I bet there are still some people who don’t know that you can get your “free” credit report, well…free! You are entitled by law to one free credit report from each of the credit reporting bureaus. Let’s check it out…
Where to Go
Go to the Federal Trade Commission website (annualcreditreport.com) and enter your full name present address and if you have lived at your present address less than two years, your previous address will be requested. Next you will be taken to a page where you will find the three major credit reporting agencies, Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. Here you will be able to get three free credit reports.
Be Ready for Questions
Check the box of the credit reports you want. If you check more than one credit bureau, you will be redirected back to the original page, to start you next credit report request.
You will want to be prepared, because you will be asked questions like: what bank you have and account with, or where you got your loan for your car and which address did you live at. These questions could be to things that happened years ago. Do you know the address you lived at 10 years ago?

Once you gain access to your credit report, I suggest you print it out and if you don’t have a printer, then copy and paste it to a word processing document. Check your credit report for inconsistencies or errors to your credit reporting. You will be able to challenge any error at this time by reporting it on line. The challenged items will be investigated by that credit reporting agency and you will be notified by e-mail the results of their findings. I have had many negative items remove from my credit by doing this.

That's It!
So, do not be fooled by promises of a free credit report, I do not care how cute the commercial is. FreeCreditReport.com is not free. Go to annualcreditreport.com and get a free credit report.

I just got my annual report from annualcreditreport.com just last month. It's very useful.
The rest of the year I use creditkarma.com which only shows you your credit score and nothing else, but it's free and seeing if your credit score changes for the worse can help you determine if something fishy is going on.
I signed up for that freecreditreport.com and was charged monthly...and that can get very expensive. I tried the free annual credit report and it is great. Very useful hub thanks for sharing
