Using your Prophetic Gift

Updated on August 5, 2017

What is a Prophetic Gift

The spiritual gift of prophecy one the gifts of the Spirit recorded 1 Corinthians 12:10 and Romans 12:6. In the Greek word is translated “prophesying” or “prophecy” in means to “speak forth” or declare the divine will of God or to discern the will and purpose of God.

The gift of prophecy is not the ability to see your future or to give a new interpretation of the Bible. It is important to never follow anyone blinding because they say they have a gift. This is where your own personal relationship with God is paramount.

The Church and the Prophetic Gift

Those churches that are familiar with the moving of the Holy Spirit will as I mentioned in Part 1, prepare the atmosphere of the house, with singing and periods of deep praise and worship.

It is at this time when a prophetic utterance will be given. Anyone can give a prophetic utterance, whether, you are a minister or layman.

1Corinthians14:5 I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interprets that the church may receive edifying.

Prophetic Utterance

The Prophetic utterance can be given one of the following ways. Through tongues and interpretation or through straight prophecy. When given through tongues and interpretation, someone in the congregation will give an utterance in tongues.

This is not just tongues, but it is tongues that will be followed by an explanation of what was spoken in tongues. It is you who the Lord has given an utterance in tongues, you will notice an urgency to speak it out.

God makes Space for the Prophetic

A prophetic utterance can be expected after the church has been taken to great heights in praise and worship. Those who are sensitive to the Holy Spirit will discern in your spirit that God is not done and that He wants to speak.

When the Lord wants to use you to give an utterance in tongues or speak out prophetically, you will have an unrest as the Holy Spirit will not let you go until you have to submit to His desire to use you.

God will usually prepare of giving space for the Lord to speak by causing a holy hush or quietness to cover the congregation. This is the time to release the Word of the Lord. If God gives you an utterance in tongues, the church must wait for someone to be obedient to give its interpretation.

1Co 14:27 If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret.

My Personal Experience with Prophecy

When God first began to use me in prophecy, when I felt God wanted me to speak, I gave an utterance in tongues. I remember waiting and praying for someone to give the interpretation of my tongues. Someone always gave the interpretation and I always gave a sigh of relief.

You may have given a message in tongues and no one was obedient to give the interpretation of tongues. Quietly pray for the Lord to give you the interpretation and you will begin to get a word or two, or phrase of a prophetic word. Step out in faith with the words you have been given, and the Lord will be faithful to give you the partial or complete prophetic interpretation.

There will be times that after you have been obedient to step out and give a prophetic utterance, that someone else will get another part of the prophecy. That is why it is important for you to be obedient, as many times God will use you as the point of contact, to release someone else to step out in faith to speak prophetically.

1Corinthians 14:29 Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge.
